About

Located in the ancient fortified town of Ravenstein, former monastery Huize Nazareth will be transformed into eighteen social rental housing units. This rehabilitation will preserve the historic building for the inhabitants of Ravenstein. The oldest part of the complex, the Steward’s House dates back to the 18th century. Later, early in the 20th century the chapel and the so-called ‘Pensionswing’, which was constructed to house poor families, were added. NEXIT has developed a restrained design for the new apartments by paying close and respectful attention to historic detailing. The carefully blended-in balconies are the only additions to the exterior of the existing fabric. The new entrance of the complex will be situated to the rear of the buildings, facing the Molensingel. Vertical access will be amply supplied by using the twin staircases, originally intended for separate traffic flows: one for men and one for women. The Steward’s House front garden is to be restored to its original style and planting scheme.
