About
By invitation NEXIT developed a spatial strategy for a future-proof revitalization of Fort bij Uithoorn in 2013. Consequently, NEXIT designed plans for the re-designation of the existing building fabric and new construction of a keeper’s home, reception space and lodgings to the south of the fort. The fort itself was to be restored and re-designated as a museum, telling the intriguing story of the ring of defensive forts constructed to defend the Dutch capital Amsterdam, the Stelling van Amsterdam. Besides renovating, restoring and reprogramming the fort, it will also be extended with newly constructed short-stay rooms. The museum will offer overnight lodgings and so increase the experiential value. The subterranean ‘barracks’ will be dug into the exterior escarpments and offer a unique view of the former fields of fire, the lines of sight and inundation works beyond the fort. The old engineers’ shed in the forecourt will be re-designated as a catering and meeting facility.
