About
Cement industry ENCI laid out a transformation plan for the now abandoned lime quarry in Sint Pietersberg near Maastricht. Dormio Leisure Development devised the ‘Concrete Hotel for Extended Stay’ concept for the transition zone within this plan. NEXIT designed a plan for Dormio that – also literally – bridges spatial chasms in the overwhelming industrial and ecological landscape of the ENCI site. Sint Pietersberg’s geology and its industrial exploitation form the basis and inspiration for this design. Readily available materials will be used to construct the building and be applied in sculptural imagery reminiscent of quarrying and shaping geological strata in the quarry.
The hotel is designed as a four-storey terraced volume that bridges the height difference between two ‘mesas’ within the quarry. The interspatial zone between quarry face and hotel will be utilized to house support facilities and lend access to the various long- and short-stay apartments.
