About

NEXIT designed two adjacent homes for this BIY (Build It Yourself) project in Arnhem: a greenhouse and a warehouse. The exterior masonry of the warehouse is made of special dark-grey ‘frog’ brick. The roof lantern gives the building its characteristic utilitarian profile. A stairwell with atrium that reaches up to roof level joins all of the living spaces together through split-level arrangements. This towering open space lends the building its particular spatial experience and despite its northerly orientation, the lantern allows masses of warm daylight to enter the home from all sides. The greenhouse’s living room on the first floor is combined with a south-facing winter garden. The glazed façade can be fully opened and offers a pleasant seating area on the street side of the house. The transversely situated steel staircase allows visual relations between all levels in the heart of the home. At ground-floor level the street side has a tacit timber-clad façade. The battening continues into the interior. The open kitchen is equipped with a fully glazed sliding door and offers maximum interaction with the garden.
