Housing corporation Volkshuisvesting is in a process of transforming a former industrial site to the east of Arnhem’s inner city into an industrious new housing area. An attractive mix of housing types and small-scale businesses will contribute to a lively reuse of a former inner-city brownfield site. Responding to the brief of a limited design competition, NEXIT developed a concept whereby the collective of new buildings breathes an atmosphere of industrial heritage. The design is characterized by rugged brick architecture and transversely oriented saw-toothed roofs (in the Netherlands these are known as shed roofs). In order to reduce the carbon footprint of the project, these sloping roof surfaces were all given an optimum southern orientation and covered in photovoltaic panels. The buildings enclose an inner courtyard that houses private parking, a communal garden and individual outdoor spaces. The new architecture is toned to blend in with the historical early industrial housing and factories in the immediate vicinity.
