About

Schuytgraaf is a large-scale housing estate south of the Rhine River that will contain 15,000 new homes, with an expected completion in 2028. The heart of this site is formed by the so-called Singelkwartier, for which NEXIT has designed three blocks containing various houses and apartments. Besides a number of relatively straightforward row houses, an apartment building and an apartment block for assisted living are situated at a crucial intersection . Kuiper Compagnons, the firm that designed the urban plan, took its inspiration from the Amsterdam School and Dudok’s brick architecture. In order to translate this inspiration into contemporary architecture, NEXIT devoted special consideration to the detailing of the façades. A composition was prepared with specially manufactured grey keystones, and particular attention was paid to entrances and bay windows. Each individual front door is marked by a vertical vegetation screen and every bay window is completed with an outdoor bench. The various houses all have different floor plans to suit diverse tenants.
